The Ray Spear (Japanese: レイスピアー, Rei Supiā) is a Racing Mini 4WD car released by Tamiya on July 17, 2021.
It was designed by Takayuki Yamazaki of pdc_designworks.
General info[]
The Ray Spear features a low-height, futuristic open-wheel body design with a long thin front nose and a rear spoiler. The cockpit part is s separate piece and the bodyshell can be configured in either the closed form (With the cockpit piece attached) and open form (With the cockpit piece removed). The 'Ray Spear', 'Tamiya' 'pdc_designworks' and 'VZ Chassis' decals can be found on the spoiler, winglets, sides of the cockpit and front fenders respectively.
Standard variant[]
The standard model features a clear green bodyshell, with white and blue stripes on it.
It was equipped with the silver, small diameter low-profile spiral-type wheels paired with the black, super hard low-profile tires, a first for a regular Mini 4WD kit release. The chassis frame and A parts were molded in white and yellow respectively.
Asia Challenge 2023[]
The special Asia Challenge 2023 model was released to commemorates the 2023 season of Mini 4WD Asia Challenge, which takes place in Thailand in 2023. This particular model features a black smoke bodyshell, with Asia-Challenge-inspired decals.
It was equipped with the black, small diameter low-profile saber-type wheels paired with the black, super hard low-profile tires. The chassis frame and A parts were molded in black and fluorescent yellow respectively.
About the designer and the company[]
Born in 1972 in Nagano Prefecture, Takayuki Yamazaki (Japanese: やまざきたかゆき, Yamazaki Takayuki, formely as 山崎隆之 before leaving Honda R&D) is a designer and the founder of the Japanese design company pdc_designworks. He is also a former Honda employee, also working as a designer from 1995 to 2012.
In 2012, after leaving Honda R&D, Yamazaki founded his own design company, which not only focuses on creating designs for cars and bikes, but also fashion, hobby toys and gadgets.
Yamazaki start designing products for Tamiya, with the first being 1/10 scale R/C buggy Dual Ridge (based upon the TT-02B Chassis and the one the Dual Ridge Jr. is based on), which was released on October 1, 2014.[1] He later designed the DCR-01 and DCR-02, the first two Mini 4WD car he ever designed. The Ray Spear marks the 4th Mini 4WD car he designed after the Dual Ridge Jr.
